Resumo:
Vila Nova de São Pedro (VNSP – Azambuja, Portugal) was classified as a production center of artefacts of different types, including prestige and symbolic items. Among these, the present work highlights a set of symbolic artefacts of a lithic nature that belong to the collection of the National Museum “Museu Arqueológico do Carmo” (MAC). In this museum, in addition to the artefacts, fragments and materials in diverse phases of processing also appear, showing the character of a VNSP-producing center. Limestone, sandstone, marble and basalt were identified as raw materials from a macroscopic characterization, pointing to the local origin of some artefacts. However, no analytical approach has been taken prior to this work.
The methodological approach applied in the study of these symbolic artefacts has to be non-destructive and included the analysis of each artefact by Prompt Gamma Activation Analysis (PGAA), in order to better obtain the composition of the total sample and by Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) performed on the surface of the artefacts and potential raw-materials. This approach contributes to the discussion about VNSP as a producer center of this type of artefacts, the origin of raw materials, as well as allows comparative studies with similar symbolic artefacts from other prehistoric sites.
Thus, this work contributes to a better understanding of the routes of raw materials, objects and symbolic characteristics of the “production center” of the VNSP during the Chalcolithic.
